The dream giver

Task: watch the video ‘Dream giver.’  You then have to write a short story or piece of
descriptive writing using this video as your inspiration.

https://vimeo.com/106989758 - This video link may work better.

By Hannah, Mylah, and Ayah

Have you ever heard of a dream giver? If you have, that is good but if you
haven’t you are in luck. I am going to tell you what a dream giver is. A dream
giver is an ugly looking fairy type creature. The fairy goes round into little kids
bedrooms and cracks a special magical egg and then pours it onto something
of the little kids things and then the little kid will hopefully have a good dream
about that object. For example, he visited a little girl and she had tap shoes on
the end of the bed. The fairy cracked an egg over the tap shoes and then she
had a nice dream about doing a tap competition and then she won it.

The sounds that you hear are CRACK and PUFF as the magic dust flows onto
your things. The dust is a sparkly gold colour and you can hear the magical
sounds in the  magical dust. The eggs have a rough feeling on the outside and
a soft and smooth feeling on the inside. Hopefully a dream giver comes into your
room and gives you a good dream. That is the end of the dream giver.

Why You Should Learn How To Swim!

Why You Should Learn How To Swim!

Every year thousands of people drown because they don’t know how to swim. It is very
important that you know how to swim. Down below I am going to list 3 reasons why you should
learn how to swim.

Firstly, Swimming is a great sport because it is good for your health and your muscles. You can
get fit. As well as going to the gym you could go swimming. Exercising makes you feel good.
At the pool you can do aqua jogging as well as swimming like; breaststroke, backstroke,
freestyle
and butterfly.

Secondly, I believe if you were on a boat and you couldn’t swim and you fell in without a life
jacket you could drown. If you were at a pool and you don’t know how to swim, you should
be in with an adult and stay at the shallow end.  Even if you know how to swim if you are
young you should still have an adult watching you. I believe it is important to know how to swim
because you could drown.

Finally, I believe you should learn to swim because it is fun and sociable. You can make new
friends or see friends from school. You and your friend could do swimming races together and
other things. If you make friends with someone in your group like swim club or swimming
lessons you could swim beside them.

In conclusion, I believe you should learn how to swim, because it is good for your muscles
and your health. You should learn to swim because you could drown one day. It is fun and
sociable and you can make new friends and see friends from school if they do swim club or
swimming lessons. I strongly agree this is why you should learn how to swim.

Toki Pounamu Film festival

     Toki Pounamu Film Festivals
                   Crime Case

Today 14.11.2019 the senior school went to the Toki Pounamu Film Festival at the
Regent Theatre. There were about 5 different schools at the film festival. This is
a film festival that all schools around Greymouth come to the film festival. It is
our first time going to the film festival. My favourite film was the crime case
report because it was funny and I really enjoyed watching it. It was different to
the other films because they were all about ‘’our place’’. I think that the slow
motion and the editing was really well done. It made me laugh. My favourite part
of the film was when the two people were chasing the robber with fake guns. My
other favourite part was at the end because they jumped on him and caught the
robber . I think the people who made it did really well. I hope we go next year to
the Toki Pounamu Film Festival.

Kiwi collage

We have been learning to make a collage on google drawing. We had to use the explore, mask and arrange tools to get our collage to come together. We had to make a NZ bird and put in into its habitat. It was lots of fun and I am really pleased with my bird. Have you ever had a go at this?

Animation Practise

Today we were learning to do an animation on google slides. We had to use free to use images and we had to change some of the code to make it work. We had to make the animation loop by changing the word false to true inside the code. In the code I also changed the moving part to make it go faster. Hope you enjoyed my animation.

Weta Information Report

This is a peice of writing that we did for our minibeast topic when we were  learning about weta. We had to write an Information report on this insect

click here to see my Success Criteria

  Amazing Weta of Aotearoa

What are weta?

Weta are native insects to New Zealand/Aotearoa. Weta are
invertebrates and they have an exoskeleton. An invertebrate
is an animal that has its skeleton on the outside which is called
an exoskeleton. Giant Weta are the heaviest insects in the world
and they weigh up to 2.5 ounces but other Weta in New
Zealand/Aotearoa don’t. Weta look similar to crickets. They have
six/ono legs. They have two antennae. They don’t have a spine.
They have ears just below the front joint of their knees. They
have an abdomen and thorax.
Even though weta are not pretty they are still important native
insects to New Zealand.

                                Where do weta live?

There are 5 main groups of weta. Weta live in many different
places.
Tusked weta live in the ground and in burrows, under stones
and big rocks. Cave/ana Weta live in sea coast caves. Giant
Weta live on an island sanctuaries. You would mostly see giant
Weta out in the open. Ground Weta live in the ground. Ground
Weta climb up trees to get some of their food/kia. These are all
the places where you can find Weta living.

                          What do weta eat?

Weta eat lots of different types of food.

Most Weta are omnivores. An omnivore is an animal that eats
both plants and meat. Some Weta are Herbivores. Herbivores
only eat leaves. Weta eat seed-heads, leaves, lichen, flowers,
fruit/Whurutu and vegetables like carrots. Weta also like to eat
worms snails and little insects like ants. Some weta hide during
the day time and come out at night to hunt for their food. These
are foods that omnivores eat as well as Herbivores and other
Weta.

Where do weta breed?

Female Weta breed in Autumn/Ngahuru.
Female Weta lay their eggs at night. Female weta lay their
eggs in the soil. Female Weta mate in summer/Raumati and
spring. Female Weta lay 6-10 eggs at a time. The eggs stay
in the ground for a whole year. The males fight each other for a
mate. As baby Weta grow they need to shed their skin.

Are Weta social?

Weta are mostly not social.
Tree weta live in groups but all of the other Weta don’t live in
groups, they many live by themselves. Some Weta use their
legs to make a chirping sound to talk to other Weta.

Threats to Weta?

There are many different threats for Weta. ‘
Before humans came the only threats to Weta were
tuatara and birds, until humans brought animals like - rats,
ferrets and cats, birds/koe, hedgehogs and mustelids. Mustelids
are stoats. Humans also came and destroyed most of their
habitats. We can look after weta by making sure they have
habitats to live in and predator free areas where they are safe.

Writing- Abandoned places

Abandoned places - writing

Our learning goals are to:
-write a description, using powerful words and phrases
-include some Te Reo Māori

-carefully check that our sentences make sense and have correct punctuation and spelling.

The abandoned house

One stormy grey/mahinahina day I was getting chased by a
person and then all of a sudden I came along an abandoned
house. It looked about 100 years old and It looked rusty. When
I opened the door smokey dust came bursting out.

Then all of a sudden water came pouring out of the house
and all that was left was soft golden sand everywhere. The
damp wooden walls were all mouldy,  and every step I took
I heard the creaking floor and there were holes in the floor.
It was really creepy.

The window was creaking behind me. I said to myself, “ How do
I get out of here?’’ I smelt something like a dirty musty smell.
I looked up and there was water dripping from the ceiling and
there were holes in the ceiling as well. All of a sudden the light
bulb fell from the roof and smashed on the floor. I saw a shadow
and then I started running. Then the ground began to shake...

My Marae Recount

Room7 Noho Marae
Trip
On the 1-2 of May term 1 2019 room seven and room five, the teachers and
parents, Miriama, Terry and Terry's cousin went on a Noho Marae to stay
the night because we were learning about our local Arahura Marae.

Evening rotations

One of my favourite things was the evening rotations.
At 7.00 o’clock we went into our evening rotations. I was inside doing games
with Phaedra and Adrian. The first game we played was rats and rabbits.
How you play is there is a skipping rope in the middle and if you call rats
then the rats have to run and the rabbits have to try to tag the rats and if the
rats get to the wall first, the rats get a point but if the rabbits tag the rats then
the rabbits get a point. The next game we played was a game that you have a
fan and you have to fan the ball to your end. The next evening rotation I did
was the technology challenge with Miss Ireland. My group was Indi, Billie and
Alaska. What we had to do was we got some paper, tape and scissors and that
is the only things we could use and then we made me into Waitaiki who is a
character for the maori legend.

Roasting Smores

After the evening rotations we gathered round the fire and Donna and
Miss Kemp made lots of smores. Then we sang a waiata all together and
Donna was dancing and we all started laughing so hard! The smores were
delicious and they smelt so good! I wanted one more smore. Then Miss
Kemp got up and told us a story, then Miss Barrow got up and told us a story.
Then we went inside the marae and got ready to go to bed.

The Bush Walk

The next day we went on a bush walk. Billie and I had to find 6 plants,
but we found them in like five minutes (it was easy). The walk  took 20 to 30
minutes but I was getting sore legs but we made it to the beautiful lake.
I loved the pretty view. When we got to the lake/ picnic point, first Miss Ireland
told us a story about the war that happened at that lake. Then we got out our kai
and started eating but we only got 10 minutes. Then Donna and Phaedra started
handing out marshmallows, we all got two each. After our  kai we started walking
back to the cars. On the way it was very funny because I was walking fast and
Billie couldn't catch up to me so she was so far behind me. When we got back from
the walk, we sat down and marked our plant sheet, then we headed back to school.

I was very nervous about the Noho Marae stay but overall it was very fun.

Thank you for taking us. It was amazing. I loved walking into the marae for
the first time.

Wharenui

We have been learning about a Wharenui because we will be going to one.

WHARENUI

A wharenui is like a book because all wharenui tell a different story
about their tribe in the past. The wharenui represents a ancestor that has
passed away that the people that own the marae want to remember. The head is
called a koruru, the arms are called maihi, the hands are called raparapa, the
spine is called tahuhu, the heart is called the Poutokomanawa and the ribs are
called heke.

A Marae can be used for many different things. When a natural disaster
happens if you are not safe at your house you could always stay at the Marae
for free. They could give you food, water and somewhere to sleep. You could
have celebrations, Wedding,Birthdays and funerals at the Marae.
Sometimes they have special important meetings at the Marae.
